How to Join Tenkey

A note before you join

A message to the experienced enthusiasts

The Japanese keyboard community is very different from others around the world - many participants design their own personalized unit from scratch, and the majority of keyboards at a Japanese meetup can be of the self-designed or non-standard varieties.
Due to these community differences, it can be difficult to understand and appreciate Tenkey if coming with the expectation of a typical Western meetup.

We strongly recommend attending with an open mind - there are infinitely many ways to appreciate keyboards beyond the scope of comparing CNC metal enclosures, chasing brand names, or being locked down to traditional layouts.
With this awareness, the wide world of keyboards at Tenkey might become the memory of a lifetime.

For the future of keyboards and Tenkey

In addition to the rules and guidelines, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Respect everyones’ works.
With the DIY nature described above, many boards on display will be the culmination of an individual’s vast research and efforts.
Even if someone else’s preferences and decisions aren’t your cup of tea, please treat both the displays and the designers with due respect.

  • Maintain a safe atmosphere.
We enforce event rules and an anti-harassment policy to make sure that all participants can enjoy the keyboard hobby safely.
Please take a look through before joining to help continue the cause.

  • The language barrier.
Not everyone on the Tenkey staff team can speak English, and most printed resources will be in Japanese.
A translating app that can translate a camera view on the fly may come in handy for the event.

Notice to International Visitors

We have recently encountered a sharp increase in challenges to the safe and proper operation of the event from international visitors.
We kindly but firmly ask all international visitors for the following:

  • Please read all required material.
All participants are held accountable to an identical set of rules and guidelines.
  • Please contact us via the methods provided on the contact page.
Other methods are invalid, and will not be seen or replied to.
  • Even if you happen to be in Japan at the time of an event and miss event registration, we cannot and will not make an exception for you to join beyond fair and equal processes allowed to everyone else.
    • We will not respond to requests for additional event capacity or unjust registration beyond what is permitted by the registration site.
    • Attempting to gain registration by spamming, harassing, or extorting staff, participants, sponsors, or any other party whether involved or uninvolved are extreme violations of the event’s Anti-Harassment Policy, and will result in an immediate ban from all Tenkey events and action from local authorities as required.
  • As per the rules, registrations on behalf of others, transferring/repurposing event registrations and/or Connpass accounts, and assisting with such actions are strictly prohibited.
    • Such privilege-transferring actions are also violations of Connpass’s Terms of Use - all individuals involved will be banned from all Tenkey events including the day of, and will also be reported to Connpass.
  • Please do not attempt to force attendance without event registration.
    • Attendance without valid event registration is not permitted, and will be denied at the gate.
    • Attempting to force entry into the venue by any means (i.e. harassing staff, forcing through or evading the building gates) will be subject to legal action and/or prosecution by local authorities for tresspassing and security violations.
